TENORA with an Itaya Maple Backplate
This model uses Itaya Maple, a wood from Hokkaido in Japan. This particular piece is a rare spalted variety, characterized by thin brown coloration and irregular black patterns. Compared to standard rosewoods handled by 634EARS, it’s softer, lighter, and lower in density.
The TENORA with Itaya Maple has a soft, warm sound. Its edges are rounded, giving it a generally mild character. It has a similar sound texture to my personal TENORA made with Ezo cherry, but the Itaya Maple version feels lighter overall. In contrast, Ezo cherry has a lower tonal center. Both provide plentiful bass, but Itaya Maple delivers a bass that feels a bit lighter and bouncier, while its treble also offers a brighter tone and more openness compared to Ezo cherry.
When comparing to the Rosewood TENORA, Itaya Maple produces thicker contours yet with less intense lines. I find that Rosewood’s contours are more defined, creating stronger contrast in the sound.
Because the tone is soft and mild, it’s not particularly speedy or sharp, but it delivers a very warm and comfortable listening experience characteristic of TENORA.
